As many as 1.09 million Russian tourists paid visit to this country in 2016. This marked an increase of 23% year-on-year growth from the year 2015. Russia is among the fastest growing sources of tourism for the country of Thailand, as declared by the department.
In December 2016, about 1,61,800 Russian tourists had visited the nation.
The figures represent a 26.2% year-on-year growth. Though Thailand continues to be on the list of most popular destinations in Southeast Asia, the numbers actually slumped from the start of March 2014 and this happened due to the devaluation of the ruble.
In 2015, as many as 884,000 Russian travellers had visited Thailand that marked a decrease of about 45% from a year earlier. The very same year, Russian tourists had spent about $2 billion in Thailand.
The arrival of Russian tourists in Thailand reached a peak at 1.7 million in the year 2013. During this point of time, the ruble was trading at 32 to the US dollar.
The Russian currency fell to 85 to the US Dollar early in 2015. Currently, it is trading at around 60.
